Building district problem-solving capacity requires learning, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence. It takes time, investment, and effort—but the benefits are enormous.

Potential Problem Analysis (PLAN)

a means for preparing to implement decisions, plans, or changes

in preparing to implement a new initiative, policy, change or decision; in preparing for a significant upcoming event

focus on contingent actions (what to do after the problem occurs) rather than on preventive actions (how to keep the problem from occurring); not planning for implementation—just “hoping” everything goes well

Predict Potential Problems
List Likely Causes
Agree on Preventive Actions
Note Contingent Actions

  • recognize potential problems or risks
  • reduce the likelihood of problems occurring
  • reduce the impact of problems should they occur
  • successfully implement new initiatives and changes
  • use the same methodology to identify and take advantage of opportunities
